Blue Lake Leadership Retreat

Recently, the leadership students of Mount Baker Secondary School attended a retreat to Blue Lake camp to build both their own leadership skills and a team momentum. Jessica Bermel, a member of the leadership team shares her following thoughts on this experience.

Throughout the weekend, students were asked to participate in activities that pushed their comfort level, built trust, and at times, seemed frustrating. The first challenge the students participated in was a “blind walk”. Every person was given a blindfold and led to a part in a maze made of rope. There was no talking, unless students asked for help, which ended up being the way out of the maze. The lesson, you can’t get through life without help, so don’t be afraid to ask. Agreeably, the most frustrating challenge was the communication challenge. In a team of five, students had to pass down directions from one to another of a small contraption that had been built, and the person at the end had to rebuild it. The challenge took over an hour for some though, and nearly all means of communication were used. The first was the only person allowed to see the contraption, and had to act out what it was to the second, who could only write down what they believed to have seen in the acting. From there, it was interpreted by the third to the fourth, and the fourth would radio down the directions to the fifth in the basement.  Around the campfire, songs were sung and scary stories were told. Only the bravest of the brave were able to stay and listen. The rest retreated to their cabin for some well wanted sleep.

For many, the weekend was a chance to get to know others they only knew by first name. In addition to student team building, Blue Lake offered teachers an opportunity to interact with the students outside of the class and build a more personal relationship. The mighty Mr. Subra was even given a Blue Lake name, and still after camp some students still refer to him as “Java”. In the cabins, students were put together with others they didn’t know well at the start of camp, but were laughing like they had known each other forever at the end of camp.  All in all, the retreat proved to be great for team building. Stay tuned for more crazy antics from the MBSS Leadership Team.
